People seek therapy for many reasons. Recognizing the unique nature of every problem, Dr. Karen Sharf has developed an eclectic therapeutic approach in her work, drawing from traditional psychotherapy philosophies, but using a more modern day counseling approach. Through the incorporation of practical cognitive tools and analytic exploration, Dr. Sharf helps individuals gain an understanding of why they do what they do, and how they can overcome their problematic behaviors and feelings while enhancing their own positive attributes.
Common conditions
Anxiety : At the forefront of treatment for anxiety is understanding the triggers and causes of your stress. Where are you when these feelings occur? How do they affect your physical body and mental functioning? What are the underlying fears that may be adding to your anxiety? In addition to understanding all of this, Dr. Sharf uses mind strengthening techniques to help you overcome anxiety and regain a sense of control.
Relationship Roadblocks : The best cure for relationship roadblocks is “Know Thyself.” When we begin to deeply understand ourselves we gain a sense of why we do what we do, and why we repeat the same patterns over and over. From understanding the self we can begin to understand another person. And from there, we can develop caring relationships.
Bereavement : It often takes a solid year to feel like yourself again after a loved one dies. During the bereavement period many unsettling feelings emerge. It is important to understand and express these feelings in order to recover from your loss and emerge with a sense of self and purpose.
Unhappiness : Many people experience an overall feeling of unhappiness. Sometimes this unhappiness is related to personal or professional challenges, and sometimes it is simply there when you wake up in the morning. Life can be difficult. Gaining clarity and understanding of who you are and what you truly want is an important leap towards happiness. This clarity is one of the most important goals in counseling.
